Actress Sibu Jili, also known as AuraSibu speaks about music, family, and her new record label

AuraSibu Steps Into a New Musical Era

From Screen Star to Sound Architect
Sibusisiwe Jili, now professionally known as AuraSibu, is no stranger to the spotlight. Celebrated for her compelling performances as an actress, she has quietly nurtured a parallel passion for music over the years. That passion is now taking centre stage as she formally commits to a career in music.

A New Chapter Through Cava Records
Marking a significant milestone in her journey, AuraSibu is a co-owner of independent label Cava Records and released her five-track EP Umshado in March. The project symbolises her full-circle moment as a creative, uniting her worlds of acting and music under one artistic vision.

The Meaning Behind Umshado
Translated from isiZulu, Umshado means “Marriage.” The title reflects the symbolic union of AuraSibu’s two lifelong passions — storytelling through acting and self-expression through music — brought together in harmony.

Introducing Abaphansi
Her latest Afro Tech/Three Step single, Abaphansi, continues this spiritual and sonic exploration. The track speaks to themes of guidance, protection, and spiritual growth, positioning AuraSibu as an artist deeply connected to purpose-driven music.

Rooted in KZN, Shaped by Sound
Born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, AuraSibu naturally gravitated toward Durban’s Gqom sound when she began making music. Over time, she has evolved her style, blending Afro Tech and House with subtle Gqom influences to create a sound that is both rooted and progressive.

Music as Healing and Reflection
For AuraSibu, music is deeply personal. She describes her sound as a reflection of her life experiences and those of people around her. This authenticity has allowed listeners to connect with her work, whether through shared struggles or the sheer enjoyment of her infectious rhythms.

The Birth of AuraSibu
The stage name AuraSibu emerged during a studio session in 2024. Inspired by the idea of light and energy, the name represents her personal journey and the “aura” she pours into her music — a creative extension of her inner growth.

A Return from the Limelight
While she may have been less visible in recent years, AuraSibu has remained creatively active. Her notable acting roles include Nomkhosi Mhlongo on Uzalo, appearances in Umjolo: Gone Girl, and the Netflix special Day Ones, where her performance earned her Best Actress nominations at the Simon Sabela Awards and NFTA.

Choosing Home and Healing
After leaving Johannesburg, AuraSibu returned to Pietermaritzburg in search of grounding and renewal. Surrounded by family, she focused on mental wellness, spirituality, and personal healing — a period she credits with reigniting her musical momentum.

Balancing Motherhood, Music and Business
As an independent artist and entrepreneur, AuraSibu acknowledges the challenges of building Cava Records from the ground up. Now three years old, the label has steadily grown, with music becoming a stronger income stream than acting. Despite financial hurdles, the journey has been rewarding, fuelled by creative freedom and consistency.

Acting vs Music? No Competition
When asked to choose between acting and music, AuraSibu is clear: both are essential. Each fulfils a different purpose in her life, and neither can exist without the other.

Looking Ahead
With new label projects in development and travel on the horizon, AuraSibu is preparing for an expansive year ahead. Taking things step by step, she remains grounded, grateful, and open to growth.
