Nespresso and The Weeknd launch Samra Origins to celebrate African heritage

The Weeknd and Nespresso Unite to Celebrate Heritage and Creativity

A Cultural Collaboration Beyond Coffee

As the world’s number one artist on Spotify, The Weeknd is more than a global superstar – he’s a cultural icon whose influence transcends music. Now, in partnership with Nespresso, he’s bringing his artistry to the coffee world through Samra Origins, a collection that connects deeply with Gen Z and Millennials who are inspired by creativity, ritual, and self-expression.

A Love Letter to His Roots

The collaboration pays tribute to The Weeknd’s Ethiopian heritage and his mother, Samra, whose strength and love have been central to his journey. Samra Origins is named in her honour — a heartfelt nod to family, tradition, and the art of coffee.

“Coffee runs deep in my family culture; it’s about gathering, sharing, reflecting,” says Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye. “That’s what Samra Origins and Nespresso mean to me – sharing a love of that tradition and making it accessible to many coffee lovers is truly incredible.”

Launching in South Africa During Heritage Month

Debuting in South Africa during Heritage Month, Samra Origins celebrates the continent’s coffee legacy while highlighting its cultural richness.

“We’re thrilled to bring Samra Origins to South Africa during Heritage Month,” says Gabriel Nobre, CEO of Nespresso South Africa. “More than coffee, this collection is an experience – it brings people together and reflects the richness of The Weeknd’s culture and the boldness of his vision.”

The Taste of Legacy: 100% Arabica from Mount Kilimanjaro

The limited-edition Samra Origins blend is a single-origin coffee featuring 100% Arabica beans from Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro region. With its balanced acidity, delicate fruit, and dry cereal notes, it offers an elevated, sensory coffee experience that merges artistry and craftsmanship.

Available for Original and Vertuo Machines

In South Africa, the Samra Origins collection will be available for Nespresso Original machines from September 2025, while the Vertuo capsule will follow in November 2025 – a nod to the growing community of younger, style-conscious coffee lovers. The range also includes exclusive accessories, including a tumbler and travel mug, designed with signature branding and a contemporary colour palette.

Inspired by Ethiopian Art and Language

All limited-edition merchandise draws from Ethiopian art, featuring the name “Samra” written in Amharic script, one of Ethiopia’s four official languages and one that The Weeknd still fluently speaks. The design celebrates authenticity and cultural pride, reinforcing the deep connection between artistry and heritage.

A Shared Vision of Creativity and Connection

“At Nespresso, we believe coffee and music have the power to transcend boundaries,” says Philipp Navratil, Global CEO of Nespresso. “Working alongside Abel and Samra Origins has allowed us to blend our dedication to exceptional flavour with his visionary artistry. This collaboration celebrates how coffee and creativity can enrich lives, and we’re proud to welcome Abel and his fans to the Nespresso family.”
