Pat on Brands partners with Telkom to Spotlight the Evolution of Heritage Brands

The Pat on Brands Dialogues Return with “The Evolution of Heritage Brands”

Heritage Month Spotlight on Brand Resilience and Innovation

This September, the Pat on Brands Dialogues return with the thought-provoking theme “The Evolution of Heritage Brands.” Made possible by Telkom, this year’s edition promises powerful conversations that highlight how iconic South African brands have withstood the test of time while continuing to adapt in an ever-changing marketplace.

Storytelling as a Catalyst for Change

Born out of a culture of storytelling, the Pat on Brands Dialogues provide a platform for brand custodians, marketers, and culture shapers to share authentic narratives of resilience, innovation, and impact. These conversations explore the intersection of culture, business, and branding, inspiring fresh perspectives on the role of brands in shaping society.

Telkom at the Heart of the Dialogue

As one of South Africa’s most recognised heritage brands, Telkom’s involvement underscores the importance of celebrating heritage while embracing innovation. For decades, Telkom has kept South Africans connected, evolving from fixed lines to mobile, fibre, and digital-first solutions.

Gugu Mthembu, Chief Marketing Officer at Telkom, shared:

“As a heritage brand, Telkom is deeply woven into South Africa’s collective memory. Over the years, we have been at the heart of storytelling, connecting South Africans and bridging distances between people, towns, and generations. This Heritage Month, we celebrate Telkom’s ability to remain relevant while staying true to its legacy, upholding our commitment to access and shared human connection.”

Celebrating Brand Storytellers

The dialogue will also feature leading voices in the brand and marketing space. Sbusiso Kumalo, CMO at African Bank — celebrating its 50th anniversary this year — and Mphothe Elizabeth Mokoena, Executive Marketing Director at Unilever South Africa, will join Mthembu on stage. Together, they will explore how heritage brands can balance tradition with innovation, building trust and long-lasting relevance.
