Oluchi Nwagboso’s inspiring journey as a Field Engineer at SLB embodies the mission of the African Women Business Energy Network to empower women to lead and shape the continent’s energy future

Oluchi Nwagboso Empowering Africa’s Energy Future Through Innovation

From a Lightbulb to the Oilfield
Oluchi Nwagboso’s journey into engineering began with a high school science project — powering a lightbulb with a battery. That small spark of curiosity lit the path toward a career in energy, one that today sees her working on the frontlines of innovation as a Field Engineer at SLB (formerly Schlumberger), one of the world’s leading energy technology companies.

Inspired by Africa’s Energy Challenges
As Oluchi advanced in her academic journey, she became increasingly aware of the energy access issues across African communities. This understanding solidified her desire to enter the energy sector with a mission: to contribute to a future where energy is reliable, sustainable, and accessible to all.

Pioneering Innovation in Namibia
In 2022, SLB launched operations in Namibia — and Oluchi was the first engineer, and notably the first female engineer, to represent the company in the country. There, she introduced cutting-edge drilling fluids technology, the Rheoprofiler 200, to local clients. Her work demonstrated how innovation can reduce environmental waste, boost efficiency, and contribute to responsible energy development.

Mentoring the Next Generation
Oluchi’s impact extends beyond her fieldwork. From her university days, she’s mentored over 15 high school students in South Africa and Namibia, encouraging young minds — especially girls — to pursue careers in STEM.

“Impact isn’t only measured in technical achievements – it’s also in the lives we uplift and the futures we help shape,”

she says.

Thriving in a Culture of Continuous Learning
Oluchi credits SLB’s culture of growth for helping her develop the confidence and capabilities she brings to her work. She has trained at technical schools in the UAE and the United States, learned under experienced mentors, and honed her skills in high-pressure environments — all of which prepared her to lead and innovate.

Taking Initiative Offshore
A key turning point in her career came during her first offshore rotation. Confronted with logistical inefficiencies, she proposed a new delivery schedule that improved operations and reduced costs — a move that underscored her confidence, initiative, and growing leadership.

Advice to Young Women in Energy
To aspiring women in engineering and energy, Oluchi offers powerful words:

“Embrace and own your personal narrative. Your background, experiences and unique perspective are what make you stand out. Be confident, stay curious and never stop learning. The energy industry needs more voices like yours – bold, authentic and driven to make a difference.”

A Story That Reflects a Continental Vision
Oluchi’s story is more than a personal success — it aligns with a broader movement across Africa to empower women in energy. Initiatives like the African Energy Chamber’s African Women Business Energy Network (AWBEN) echo her commitment to fostering inclusive environments where talent can thrive.

Lighting the Way Forward
Driven by curiosity, resilience and purpose, Oluchi Nwagboso is not only building a career — she’s shaping a legacy. Her story reflects what’s possible when potential meets opportunity, and when one woman dares to lead, innovate, and make a lasting difference in Africa’s energy story.
