Limpopo’s Keletso Monareng Wins L’Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science Award
In a remarkable stride for South African science and innovation, Keletso Monareng, a PhD candidate in Physics at the University of Limpopo, has been announced as one of the winners of the 7th L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards 2025.
Monareng’s groundbreaking research focuses on the development of sodium-ion batteries, a promising and sustainable alternative to the widely used lithium-ion technology. Unlike lithium batteries, which rely on toxic and costly materials, sodium-ion batteries use salt—a safer, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly resource. Her work holds immense potential for transforming the future of clean energy storage, making renewable power more accessible and sustainable.
Born and raised in Ga-Sekororo Village near Tzaneen, Monareng’s achievement stands as a powerful testament to the innovation emerging from South Africa’s rural communities. Her success not only highlights the growing impact of women in STEM fields but also shines a spotlight on the University of Limpopo’s commitment to nurturing world-class scientific talent.
The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards celebrate exceptional female scientists whose research contributes to solving global challenges. Monareng’s recognition places her among Africa’s brightest young researchers shaping the continent’s scientific future.
As South Africa continues to push for innovation in renewable energy and environmental sustainability, Keletso Monareng’s work serves as an inspiring reminder that brilliance knows no boundaries — not even geography.
