Bulelani Balabala Joins G20 Startup20 Taskforce on Township and Rural Development
Appointment Under G20 Presidency
Renowned township entrepreneurship advocate Bulelani Balabala has been appointed to serve on the Startup20 Township and Rural Entrepreneurship Taskforce under South Africa’s G20 Presidency in 2025. The appointment reflects the country’s commitment to inclusive economic growth, particularly within historically underserved communities.
Shaping Global Policy for Local Impact
As part of Startup20—the official G20 engagement group dedicated to startups and entrepreneurship—this taskforce is tasked with driving policy and programmatic innovation to support rural and township economies. The work will focus on:
- Ground-level policy input that addresses real challenges and opportunities
- Practical support for informal and micro-enterprises
- Capacity-building, digital inclusion, and ecosystem strengthening
- Unlocking investment and market access for underserved communities

A Voice for Over 3 Million Micro-Enterprises
Balabala shared his appreciation for the role, saying, “This is more than a personal milestone—it’s an opportunity to represent the voices and needs of over 3 million micro-enterprises in underserved communities who deserve to help shape the future of the global startup economy.”
Driven by a Decade of Grassroots Impact
Balabala’s appointment builds on more than 10 years of impact through the Township Entrepreneurs Agency (TEA) and the Township Entrepreneurs Alliance, two platforms he founded to empower township-based entrepreneurs across South Africa. These platforms have supported over 100,000 entrepreneurs through programmes focused on skills development, market access, funding readiness, and policy engagement.
Making Township Entrepreneurship Visible, Investable, and Viable
With a clear mission to make township entrepreneurship more visible, investable, and viable, Balabala’s role in the Startup20 Taskforce is a natural progression of his commitment to driving inclusive entrepreneurship in South Africa and beyond.
G20 with a Local Lens
As South Africa assumes the G20 Presidency in 2025, Bulelani Balabala’s appointment ensures that township and rural entrepreneurship are not only part of the conversation—but central to shaping the future of global startup ecosystems.
