CIPC Celebrates Young Innovators at Inaugural IP Youth Awards

The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) took a bold step in championing youth innovation with the launch of the inaugural CIPC IP Youth Awards, held on 27 March 2025 in Pretoria. The event marked a groundbreaking moment in celebrating the ingenuity and intellectual property (IP) achievements of young South Africans aged 15 to 28.

Bringing together a dynamic mix of entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and stakeholders, the awards ceremony honoured remarkable innovations across five key categories, each designed to highlight the power of IP in driving creativity, sustainability, and socio-economic growth.

Honouring the Brightest Minds in Innovation

The evening spotlighted visionary projects aimed at tackling real-world challenges through cutting-edge invention and creativity. Winners included:

  • Tech for Good Award: Juandre Klopper for EZ Airway, a revolutionary modular video laryngoscopy system designed to improve advanced airway management.
  • Counterfeit Combat Award: Taharah Mchunu for MyRariFile, a digital healthcare solution simplifying access to patient records and combating counterfeit medical practices.
  • Copyright Creators Award: Nhlanhla Langa for Mo ‘n Fro, an innovative online gaming platform.
  • SMME Excellence Award: Landile Mabele for NavWok, a smart walking stick designed to help visually impaired individuals navigate spaces more efficiently.
  • Women in IP Award: Mahlogonolo and Masego Mphahlele for TwinX, a game-changing invention in the healthcare sector—x-ray glasses that allow for faster and safer imaging procedures.

The achievements of these young minds reflect South Africa’s rich potential for global leadership in innovation and IP-driven enterprise.

Building a Platform for Future Trailblazers

CIPC Commissioner, Advocate Rory Voller, emphasized the broader vision behind the awards:

“Intellectual property is not just a legal framework; it’s the lifeblood of our economy and culture. Through these awards, we aim to honour the visionary thinkers and creators who inspire us all to push boundaries and redefine what’s possible. Together, let’s shine a light on the power of intellectual property and innovation and the impact it has on our lives and economic growth.”

The gala featured keynote speeches from top industry experts, thought-provoking panel discussions on IP and business development, and networking opportunities where young creators engaged with potential investors and mentors.

Looking Ahead

Following the resounding success of the event, CIPC announced plans to expand the IP Youth Awards in 2026, with enhanced opportunities for mentorship, funding, and international collaboration. This commitment underlines CIPC’s dedication to nurturing South Africa’s next generation of innovators and positioning the country as a hub of intellectual and creative excellence.
