Uber Eats Celebrates Local Business Success at Second Annual Merchant Awards
Uber Eats reaffirmed its commitment to supporting businesses of all sizes at the second annual Merchant Awards, held recently in Johannesburg.
The event celebrated the exceptional achievements of merchants on the platform, highlighting the critical role they play in driving growth and innovation within South Africa’s economy.
The 2024 Merchant Awards recognized excellence across 47 categories, grouped under themes like Operational Excellence, Eater Choice, and new additions focused on grocery and retail businesses.
Co-hosted by renowned radio DJ and content creator Nick Hamman, alongside Zola Rapoone from Uber Eats Merchant Operations, the event showcased the platform’s commitment to collaboration and progress.
The highlight of the evening was the announcement of Merchant of the Year, awarded to Andrew Flanagan of The Poke Co.. First and second runners-up were Ribs & Burgers Menlyn Maine and Kimchi Restaurant in Woodstock, respectively.
“Winning this award is a humbling experience,”
said Flanagan.
“Being a part of the Uber Eats platform has allowed us to connect with more customers, grow our business, and provide better service to our community. It’s inspiring to know that our hard work is recognised and appreciated.”
Empowering Local Merchants
Since its launch in South Africa in 2016, Uber Eats has evolved from a delivery service into a platform enabling merchants to expand their reach, improve operations, and deepen customer relationships.
Nakampe Molewa, Uber Eats General Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighted the company’s mission to uplift local businesses:
“Local businesses are the backbone of South Africa’s economy, driving job creation, innovation, and elevating the communities they serve. That’s why Uber remains committed to connecting communities, driving opportunity, and unlocking growth for our merchants.”
Molewa emphasized that Uber Eats’ technology-driven solutions empower businesses with tools to thrive in the digital economy. The platform provides merchants with data insights, such as peak ordering times and popular menu items, enabling them to tailor their offerings and improve customer satisfaction.
Driving Economic Growth
Uber Eats has contributed an estimated R1.6 billion in additional value for merchants across South Africa. This growth reflects the platform’s role in helping restaurants and retailers meet the demands of a fast-paced, convenience-driven consumer market.
“Uber Eats has been fortunate to play a role in boosting the local economy while supporting small businesses,”
added Molewa.
“We will continue to introduce innovative features and products that redefine mobility and expand opportunities for restaurants, retailers, and vendors.”
The awards celebrated not only individual achievements but also the broader impact of the Uber Eats ecosystem in enhancing accessibility and mobility for businesses and communities alike.
The evening served as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in driving sustainable growth for merchants of all sizes. Uber Eats pledged to continue fostering these opportunities, ensuring local businesses remain at the heart of its mission.
