Celebrating Innovation and Resilience in South Africa’s Entrepreneurial Heartlands
The Township Entrepreneurs Alliance (TEA) is gearing up for the 6th Annual Township Economy Summit and Awards, set to take place on 21st and 22nd November 2024 in Tembisa, Gauteng.
This milestone event, which will bring together township entrepreneurs, government leaders, and corporate giants, promises to be the most impactful summit yet in fostering growth, innovation, and resilience within South Africa’s township economy.
For nearly a decade, TEA has been at the forefront of empowering township and rural entrepreneurs, directly supporting over 80,000 businesses across South Africa’s diverse townships.
With a national footprint, the organisation continues to play a pivotal role in stimulating economic development and addressing the unique challenges faced by entrepreneurs operating within these often underserved communities.
A Vision for Inclusive Economic Growth
The summit will focus on unlocking the immense potential of the township economy, a sector valued at over R900 billion. Aimed at fostering an inclusive and thriving economic future for South Africa, the event will feature high-level discussions on key industries poised for growth, including green economy initiatives, manufacturing, wholesale and retail, automotive, construction, and information and communication technology (ICT).
Bulelani Balabala, founder of TEA, shared his excitement for the summit, stating,
“We are immensely proud to host the 6th Annual Township Economy Summit & Awards. This event not only celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit of our township communities but also catalyses the future of our economy, helping us realise the untapped potential in these vibrant areas.”

The two-day event will dive deep into several industries critical to the economic growth of township entrepreneurs:
- Green Economy: Exploring sustainable practices and business opportunities for entrepreneurs within the green sector.
- Manufacturing: Highlighting opportunities for township businesses to scale and establish manufacturing ventures.
- Wholesale & Retail: Discussing strategies for market entry and expansion within South Africa’s vast retail and wholesale industries.
- Automotive Industry: Identifying opportunities related to vehicle repairs, parts supply, and sales in township areas.
- Construction: Examining infrastructure development and building project prospects in the township context.
